Merrifield seeks to define the urban in our current setting. The urban landscape used to be one of concentrated worker-maintenance, where services supported the reproduction of the working class. Now, the city is pillaged for land-speculation, an elite enriched by imaginary wealth hollowing out the city such that the urban periphery is actually where the action is.
the text asks: What processes led us here? What names do we give those processes? What is the urban, how is it different from a city? To whom does the city belong? (the parasites). To whom does the urban belong? (us).
